Larger than life Bishop Joe passed away suddenly, the week before Christmas 2010.

The much loved Bishop of the people was born in Malta in 1948. He arrived in Australia 40 years ago and has been an eloquent voice for God’s love of the people, especially the people of Bendigo and the youth. He inspired every one he touched with his warmth and compassion.  He was ordained in 1974 and worked for the Maltese Migrant population in Melbourne and became Bishop of Sandhurst in 2001.

Bishop Joe’s friend Fr Robert Galea praised how Bishop Joe found the right fine balance between the home country Malta and his great commitment to the Australian Communities, including the Maltese.

Bishop Joe had a great commitment to the youth and he gave an amazing and unforgettable homily to 100,000 youth on World Youth Day in 2008.

He shared his words of wisdom, saying that “ God does not make rubbish and inspired the view that we can always be better."

The top photo is Bishop Joe at Sunday Mass Sacred Heart Cathedral Bendigo, in 2007 and below, with Cr Gerry Pule, Deputy Mayor of the Town of Bassendean.
